IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Tobias
Species: Human (originally) (though his dad is an alien)/hawk (usually)
Canon: Animorphs
Canon Point: End of book 43
Character Age: 15ish mentally, physically about 13 in his human morph, physically a juvenile to young adult in hawk form.

Tobias is okay to be in a setting like this because he's been in a war for the past two or so years. He kills to eat and kills to save humanity so he's used to awful things happening. It's Fine.
CRAU: No

Character Appearance: Here is the PB I use for his human form (Connor Paolo). He's described as having dirty blond hair but the book covers have different models and don't always have a consistent 'look', but he's definitely 'skinny little nerd' in appearance. Usually he looks like this.
Powers and Abilities: In his hawk form, Tobias has access to the bird's natural eyesight, hearing, flying abilities, and talons. In addition, he also has the following morphs and all the physical abilities of them:

Red-tailed hawk ('natural' form), raccoon, Hork-Bajir (Ket Halpak), human (himself), racehorse, bottlenose dolphin, hammerhead shark, fly, mole, bat, mosquito, deinonychus (unusable, Sario Rip morph), seagull, african elephant, flea, rabbit, baby seal, polar bear (Nanook), sperm whale, giant squid, chimpanzee, bull, eel, mountain goat, Andalite (Ax), orca whale (Swoosh), Nartec, honeybee, human (Taylor), Taxxon.

In theory he can acquire any being's DNA (or equivalent thereof) and morph into them.

He can only stay in a form for two hours in canon, or risk being trapped in that morph forever. Since that happened to him once already, he's not eager to have that happen again. The ability comes with an exhaustion penalty, and frequent morphing is a huge energy drain on its own.

He also has the use of thought-speak (mind-to-mind speech, though only one way unless the other person has the same ability). As this is needed for communication, and is more or less a 'passive' ability, this is an 'always-on' power. (Strangely, this ability does not work when he is in a human morph.)
What Did Your Character Wish For? An end to the war.
What Potion Did They Receive? Red
Did They Drink It? After people tell him it's okay, yes.
If Yes, What Element/Animal? Lightning!

Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon, or who is someone they miss the most and why?

Who he's bonded with is Rachel. Absolutely Rachel - they're dating even if they don't know it. She was kind and fierce and protective when he needed it. He loves her deeply and is protective of her in turn - but she doesn't need protection. She's independent and wild and primal in a way that he can understand now that he's a hawk. He's glad to have her by his side and he's more than happy to have her near him. He doesn't know what he'd do without her - but he's going to have to get used to operating without her here.

2. What are they most afraid of and why?

He's afraid of failure. He's not afraid of pain - he's endured pain that other people can barely imagine, both physical and mental. What he's afraid of is the look on his friends' faces if they realize he failed. His family situation didn't help him not be afraid of failure - his uncle didn't care if he won an art competition if it didn't gain him anything, for example. He's terrified of being a disappointment to people he cares about. He's terrified about letting them down, of letting the entire human race down, and maybe letting the entire universe down. His hawk instincts tell him to protect himself, but he's scared to not protect others who are relying on him.

3. What are their emotional, mental, and physical weaknesses and why?
Answer for all three.

Emotionally Tobias is pretty weak to anyone who's been hurt or used. He knows what it's like to be abused even if he wouldn't call it that. His heart is still soft and human as much as he would prefer to keep it as a hawk. He's not sure how to harden his heart completely and he's not sure he wants to. Mentally it's probably that he can be goaded into a fight or a trap. He thinks like a hawk a lot of the time where you don't really worry about sneak attacks. He's good at spotting them when he's a hawk, but things other than physical traps are a bit of a weakness. And in terms of physical weaknesses... in human form he's a skinny nerd. In hawk form he's a bird with hollow bones. He can't really take a beating.

4. What discrepancies are there between their inner self (who they feel they are) and their outer self (how they present themselves to others)?

Internally Tobias is still the small, scared kid that he was when Jake found him being bullied and saved him. Externally he has to present as a tough hardened warrior. If he starts cracking under the pressure then that means everyone's at risk, and he can't have that happen because they're fighting a war here. The worst thing they can do is fail, and he knows it - so he has to do everything in his power to prevent it. If that means that he has to hide who he was and who he feels like he is to get it done then that's what he's going to have to do.

5. What would make them happiest and why?

Tobias doesn't really know what would make him happiest. Finding his family again? He's written them off for the most part. If he'd say 'winning the war', what then? He doesn't know what he'd do afterwards. <Be happy for me, and all those who fly free.> is one of his most well known quotes, but freedom without the people he cares about would be hollow. He doesn't want to be caged, he wants to be free - but he wants that freedom for other people as well, human or alien or animal. He knows that someone who's caged can't do much... so freedom is probably the thing that would make him ultimately happiest... though it depends on the cost.

6. What characteristics does someone need to have to be your character's ideal significant other?

Be Rachel.

No but to elaborate on that, he needs someone who will see him for who he is - a teen who needs care and affection and someone who can pull him along on something that needs to be done if he's been too cautious. He needs a wild personality, because he's a wild animal now. Not the kind who goes to concerts, but the kind who will race you to the top of a hill and yell for no reason as you slide down. But he also needs someone intelligent and empathic enough to see when he's hurting, hold him in the quiet moments of tragedy and pain. He needs a balance for his own wild vs. human balance, someone to help him course correct when he needs it.

7. Would your character make a sacrifice to save someone else and why or why not?

Yes, absolutely. Especially if it's Rachel, but in general the Animorphs have to be willing to sacrifice for each other and for all of humanity. They've come close to death on a number of different occasions, but Tobias especially considers himself disposable. He doesn't have anyone outside of the Animorphs who cares about him, and he'd not be missed by anyone but them. After all, who misses a bird? Who misses a kid most assume to be homeless? He's put himself at risk for the others before and barely gotten out (with their help) but he's the perfect piece for that kind of thing. He doesn't mind - or at least, he'll say he doesn't.

8. What is one thing they would tell their younger self if they had the chance, or if your character is young, what is one thing they would want their older self to remember?

He'd probably tell his younger self 'this isn't forever'. The circumstances of his life are awful and they don't get all that much better when he's a teenager - swapping one bad thing for another. But even still, this isn't forever. He has to hold out, he has to hold on. He has to have the determination to make it through his life because otherwise what did he put in all of that effort for? He's doing his best to keep it together until the Andalite fleet comes and gives them backup - because they will. They have to. There's got to be something better than what his situation is right now.

9. When in dire circumstances does your character fight, flee, freeze or fawn and how does that look?
Fight. He absolutely will fight if he can, though he'll flee if he must. Living as a hawk in a war has taught him many things, including a lot of danger assessment techniques. He's often afraid to fight, having grown up as a skinny nerd kid who was easily bullied. But as he says in one of the books: <There's only one way to deal with fear: Be afraid. Be afraid, and then go ahead and do what you have to do anyway.> He will push forward for everyone else's sake, even if he doesn't think his own sake is worth fighting for.

10. Why did your character make the wish they did?

Partially he made that wish because he would never think to wish for himself. Even in his deepest heart he really doesn't think that his own wishes are worth voicing. He wants an end to the war, an end to the fighting so all the others can go and be normal teens again. He's... not sure that he would, but this has been their goal since the beginning. Losing isn't an option and they have to explore all sorts of ways to end the war. Wishing on a crystal really isn't the weirdest thing in his life when you look at some of the shit the 'higher powers' of his universe have pulled off.
